Marle Woman: Mella McGinity

Marle Women is created to celebrate our philosophy of designing pieces for women of all ages and stages of their lives. Each feature profiles a selection of women across the generations that we admire. We hope each interview inspires you, the same way in which these women do to us.

It is a pleasure to introduce Mella McGinity. Photographed with her granddaughter Tyla, both wearing the Hunter Shirt. Images by Ben Parry.

Name: Mella McGinity
Age: 70

Can you share a little bit about yourself, your background, upbringing and career? What aspects have contributed to the woman you are today?

I was born in Otorohanga and grew up on a dairy farm. I married a local farmer, Danny at 20 and went on to raise out four children on a dairy farm in Maihiihi. We then moved to Te Puke and bought into a kiwi fruit orchard and continued to raise our children, I went on to work in the kiwi fruit industry for 26 years. I recently retired and now spend my time looking after my 13 grandchildren who are based between New Zealand and Australia.

I grew up in a family that loves to cook and have passed that on to all my children. Food plays a big part in our family and we love any excuse to organise a gathering. Danny and I recently celebrated our 50 year wedding anniversary with a dinner and party put on by our children and grandchildren in Rarotonga.

How would you describe your personal style? Has it always been this way or has it evolved over the years? How?

I’ve always been sure of my style, I used to design and make all of my clothing and have always had an interest in fashion. In the 80’s I had my own clothing label and boutique in Otorohanga, called Taurus.

Have you always been confident in your style, or is it something one learns with age?

I have always been confident in my style, and always made pieces I wanted to wear rather than following trends.

What do you love most about wearing Marle? How does it make you feel?

It’s very true to my style - comfortable and stylish. I love the oversized and more floaty pieces, they all match back with other items in my wardrobe.

What is your take on a personal ritual?  Do you have any rituals when getting dressed each morning?

I’m put on what I feel most comfortable and classy in. Usually slim cut trousers and an oversized top or jumper.

What conversations do you wish more people were having day to day?

It is quite common for women loose their interest in fashion as they mature, I think this is due to a lack of representation and age diversity within the fashion industry. It’s starting to change, and I hope fashion labels continue to show that stylish clothing isn’t just for young people.

What is a piece of personal wisdom that you carry with you?

Always treat people the way you want to be treated. Be kind.
